If you do one thing for your built-in refrigerator this year, clean the condenser. A dust-packed condenser cannot shed heat, so the compressor runs longer, the cabinet drifts warm, and on a hot day the high-temperature alarm trips. It is also the easiest maintenance task to do yourself.
Why It Matters
The condenser is the coil that releases the heat pulled out of the fresh-food and freezer compartments. On a built-in it usually sits behind the upper grille. When it clogs with dust and pet hair, heat rejection drops and every other part works harder to compensate.
How to Clean It
- Turn the unit off or set it to the service mode if it has one.
- Remove the upper grille, usually held by clips or a couple of screws.
- Vacuum the coil and fins, then use a soft brush to loosen packed dust and vacuum again.
- Wipe the surrounding area and refit the grille.
How often. Twice a year is right for most homes; every few months if you have shedding pets. If the cabinet is still warm after a good cleaning, book a visit to check the fan and sealed system.
