An F1 on a Thermador wall oven or Pro Grand range is a control fault: the electronic control has detected a runaway condition or lost confidence in its own logic and has shut the oven down as a precaution. On a Masterpiece ME301 or a PRD48 it usually surfaces after a self-clean cycle or a power event.
The control watches the temperature sensor and the heat relays and expects them to agree. When the board sees a reading it cannot reconcile, or a relay that will not release, it logs F1 and cuts power. The question is whether the control board itself has failed or whether it is reacting correctly to a bad sensor feeding it nonsense.
We separate those two by testing the RTD sensor across its resistance range and watching whether the relays drop out on command. A sensor that reads in spec points the finger at the control board; a sensor that reads open or shorted means the board is doing its job and the sensor is the fault.
What You Can Safely Check
- Cut power at the breaker for a minute, then restore it, since F1 sometimes clears after a true power event.
- Note whether F1 appeared during bake, broil, or right after self-clean.
- Keep the oven off until it is diagnosed so it does not relatch into the fault.
